One Year Modern Upholstery Course
A one year part-time course in modern and creative upholstery
Traditional Upholstery School we know there are many people who would like to be able to successfully reupholster pieces to a professionally high standard.
We have designed this course to bridge the gap between leisure classes and the full commitment of professional training. Our unique One Year Modern Upholstery Course gives a thorough training in essential transferable commercial upholstery skills. Students will learn by working on carefully chosen pieces of furniture, producing at least eight beautiful projects.

01 & 02
Sewing skills
Sewing is essential skill for upholsterers. You will make a perfect piped scatter cushion with a lapped zip, and a box cushion (with a border) made to fit either the footstool or armchair project.. A lot of vital skills are packed into these sewing projects, from cutting, measuring and pinning to confident use of your sewing machine.

Pouffee with piped detail
This is where it all starts. So much creative fun to be had upholstering a little pouffe. (Warning: they tend to be a bit addictive).

Creative upholstery skills
Students make four samples, learning creative upholstery skills including shallow buttoning; ruched, pleated and piped borders; and handing tricky shapes.

Ottoman style footstool
Design your own footstool, from the size and shape… to the choice of legs… to the fabric. Made with a piped border or a box cushion.

Upholstered sewing box with deep buttoned lid
Dozens of core upholstery skills are packed into this useful project. Students may opt to include the deep buttoning element on the footstool or the box lid.

Fireside chair, with no arms
Get to grips with upholstered pads, pattern cutting and fabric measurements.

Modern armchair
The grand finale. Give an old favourite a brand new lease of life.
This course is unique to the Traditional Upholstery School and has been carefully developed by our own tutors to create a high quality, accessible structured course.
