Creative Upholstery – Loose covers

We are thrilled to launch our latest upholstery course. Starting in January 2026, Creative Upholstery – Loose Covers will focus on the use of modern upholstery, sewing skills, pattern cutting and making fitted loose covers to make beautiful bespoke upholstered pieces. This practical workroom-based course is designed to suit both beginners looking to acquire skills to make beautiful pieces for their home, and to broaden existing skills of upholsterers and soft furnishers.
Students will make three main projects to take home, plus a range of useful sewing samples. On completion students will be able to produce a wide range of creative and bespoke pieces. Creative Upholstery – Loose Covers is unique to Traditional Upholstery School. It has been carefully developed by our tutors to create a high quality accessible structured course packed with great projects that offer a huge range of transferable skills. It is suitable for complete beginners, sewers and upholstery hobbyists who wish to develop their skills further.

Cushions and creative edges
The sewing journey starts here. You will earn the core skills of sewing for upholstery. Students will start at the beginning, with a set of samples of decorative sewn edges: piped, ruched, pleated and scalloped. You'll then choose one of these edges to show off when making a scatter cushion with lapped zip. Plump it up!

Footstool with box cushion and loose cover
Students start by upholstering a footstool frame ready for making a fitted loose cover with box cushion. Once the frame is upholstered – a surprisingly quick job – students will exercise their new sewing skills to make up a box cushion, and a fitted loose cover for the stool. The loose cover can be plain or have a pleated or ruffled skirt. Plenty of opportunity here for creativity.

Make a loose cover for an upholsteredchair
Time to show off your new skills and make a totally bespoke loose cover in your own choice of fabric for an upholstered chair. Start with a mood board to explore your ideas and end up with a fabulous piece of furniture for your home. This project includes plenty of opportunity for creativity and you will learn incredibly useful transferable skills. Exciting!
