Traditionally stitched footstool - a three day course
This three-day workshop is designed to introduce novice upholsterers the traditional edge stitching skills which are essential to the upholsterers' craft. They will work on a hand-built footstool frame, 12in x 18in, which will be theirs to take home.
Over the three days students will build up their upholstered pad with traditional upholstery materials: webbing, hair and hessian. They will learn how to create a beautifully-formed and enduring shape using bridle, blind and top edge stitching techniques, a double pointed needle, regulator and linen twine. Once the stitched edge is complete, they will finish their stool with a second stuffing of hair, linterfelt and calico. Students will be able to finish their footstool in their own top fabric, assuming they anticipate getting to that stage by the end of the course. The tutor is Eloise Scotland, a top tutor at the Traditional Upholster School, and a practising upholsterer based at her own Bath workroom. Students will be given a comprehensive worksheet to take home (there'll be a lot to remember ;-)). The idea is that once you've finished the course you'll be able to continue upholstering your chosen pieces at home.
What is provided? The hand-built footstool frames will be provided, sized: 12 x 18in, with unfinished (bare wood) 6in Queen Anne style legs. Students may provide their own legs for fitting in advance. Details will be provided on booking. All filling materials, calico and tacks will be provided as part of the course.
What do you need to bring? Students should supply their own top fabric. This should be a good quality upholstery weight fabric. 1m should suffice. Students are welcome to bring their own tools, if they have them.
