Pleated Lampshade Making - a Two Day Course
This busy and skill-packed class is designed to teach all the skills involved in the satisfyingly precise craft of pleated lampshade making. Popular back in the fifties when our parents and grandparents were young, pleated shades are enjoying a revival, with a fresh twist of course. Students will be taught how to: restore and bind their frame; to measure and mark up for their chosen arrangement of pleats; to fold and stitch; fit a lining; and how to make bias binding (the most useful and versatile lampshade trim of all).
As this class is designed for those starting out in lampshade making, we will be making single fold knife pleats, which work best on straight-sided drum and cone, or empire, shaped shades. If you have one, bring it along, otherwise we can pre-order one for you for the course. What to bring? We will provide you with a French drum lampshade frame which is ideal for learning this technique. You should bring your own top fabric. A lightweight cotton lawn or silk doupion would be ideal. We have sewing machines, but do bring your own sharp fabric scissors and a general sewing kit. Plain antique white lining fabric and cotton tape are provided for use on the course. We will keep your creativity fuelled plenty of tea, coffee and home made cake. You are welcome to bring a packed lunch or may prefer to make the most of the village shop.
