Lampshade Summer School 2020 - a four day courseThis four day workshop is designed to teach makers, upholsterers and soft furnishers the complete set of lampshade maker's skills: how to make tailored, pleated and gathered lampshades.
The workshop is designed to teach core skills and techniques to a professional standard. Tailored lampshade making skills will cover: template making, working with pattern and grain, cutting out and sewing skills, pinning and fitting, and using braids and trims with finesse. Pleating skills will cover the core skill of knife pleats and there will be masterclass demos in swathes and sunburst arrangements for those who are keen to progress there techniques further. Gathered lampshade making - very popular in interiors at the moment - will also be taught. On all techniques - and whatever your experience - creativity and experimentation will be actively encouraged. The course will include a school trip to Bath one evening for a walking tour of the Georgian city followed by dinner . Your expert tutor is upholsterer, lampshade-maker and author of Sewing Lampshades Joanna Heptinstall. She is also founder of the Traditional Upholstery School. Who's it for? This class is designed for students who are already capable sewers, and are fully versed in using a sewing machine. There will be a minimum of two tutors on this workshop which means we can teach students who have no previous experience in lampshade making as well as those who are looking to evolve their skills and work on more complex projects. What to bring? Students should bring their own lampshade frames and fabrics, plus decorative trims to finish. We usually have some vintage shade frames available for sale. Ideally we would like students to bring their own sewing machine, in good working order, if possible. We will keep your creativity fuelled plenty of tea, coffee and lunch. Most students are likely to require accommodation. Please do enquire when you email initially so that we can recommend suitable local bed and breakfasts and hotels. Thank you.
