Fans and Sunbursts - a pleated lampshade masterclassThere is something deliciously boudoir about a pleated chiffon lampshade. It's that almost impossible-to-achieve combination of the sheerest softest fabric with precision perfect pleating... a glorious challenge for the lampshade maker (but we do rather like to show off...)
This class is designed to bring lampshade makers who have already mastered simple knife and box pleating techniques up to a new level of creativity and technical excellence. Over the two/three days we will be looking at the skill and structure of sunburst and fan pleating, mastering the measuring and folding techniques. Students will choose one of these skills to work on during the two days, creating their own shade to take home. Students will be provided with a rectangular empire shade to work on. These will be lined in silk doupion and then cover with pleated silk chiffon. Who's it for? Lampshade makers who have already mastered simple pleating techniques such as knife and box pleats. This course is for confident makers and sewers. Students will be expected to be able to work independently on their own design. What is provided? We will provide each student with a rectangular empire shade to work on. We will also provide binding tape, silk doupion and silk chiffon fabrics, all in shades of white and cream. Pins, needles, sewing threads and sewing machines will all be available for use. What to bring? Students will be provided with suitable shade frames which will be their working practice frames for the duration of the course. There is no need to bring alternatives but if you have something you are planning to work on in future, you are welcome to bring it for discussion. Silk fabrics are also provided, all in natural shades of white and cream. Students may bring their own appropriate fabrics to use if they prefer. Students are encouraged to bring their own haberdashery kits, simply because most of us like to use our own things. We will keep your creativity fuelled plenty of tea, coffee and home made cake. You are welcome to bring a packed lunch or may prefer to make the most of the Field Kitchen, which is just next door.
