Professional Diploma in Upholstery 2020
The Traditional Upholstery School's Professional Diploma in Upholstery is designed specifically to train students in the core skills required to set up as an upholsterer. The next courses begin in January 2020 and will run on Mondays and Wednesdays, for one day a week each during usual school term times.
A new career
Training one day a week in the workshop over a full academic year, diploma students build up their skills working on a range of furniture. This thorough and continuous training reinforces the technical skill and confidence required to go on to launch a small business or find employment within the upholstery industry. (And the grand news is that the world seems to never have quite enough top notch upholsterers!). Typically we have five to seven students per course, the amount and quality of the tuition received is exceptional, and is geared to encourage individual development.
Whether you have chosen upholstery as a brand new career, or to complement an already successful career in interiors or soft furnishings, you can make your new upholstery business as creative and varied as you want it to be. You do not need any previous upholstery skills to begin this course, although a love of fabric and passion for working with your hands is a very good start. On graduation, students will receive a certificate of their training.
Students who have completed this course often come back to further broaden their skills on our advanced upholstery short courses, which include: more complex traditional upholstery stitching techniques; fluting; and tackling the exacting craft of pattern cutting with the re-upholstery of a mid-century concave chair.
The Traditional Upholstery School is an independent training centre, offering its own carefully developed and unique training courses. It's founder and chief tutor Joanna Heptinstall is a member of the Association of Master Upholsterers.
"Joanna's patience, good humour and enthusiasm gave me the confidence to start my own business. She's an absolute gem!" Jenny, Oxford 2016
The next Traditional Upholstery School Professional Diplomas start in January 2020. Classes run on either Mondays and Wednesdays throughout term time, and will conclude in December 2020. Students will receive their Certificate of Graduation at the end of the course. The day starts at 9.30am and finishes at 4.30pm.
