Hand stitched mattress cushions - a two-day workshop

Hand stitched mattress cushions are enjoying a wonderful revival. They are instantly recognisable by their sculpted edges and decorative tufting. This workshop will teach you how to make your own mattress cushions (whether dog bed or day bed) from scratch - any shape or fabric.
You will start by learning how to make your own machine-stitched box cushion filled with foam or hollow fibre to create your chosen shape. You will go on to learn French mattress stitch and how to make your own tufts. The workshop is designed to teach the core sewing skills and techniques involved to a professional standard. Your expert tutor is upholsterer and maker Eloise Scotland. Whatever your experience - creativity and experimentation will be actively encouraged. Be warned... you won't want to stop at one.

Who's it for? This class is designed for students who are able to use a sewing machine and have some some basic sewing experience.

What to bring? We will provide various suitable stuffings for you to choose from, for stuffing your mattress cushion. These will include natural wool stuffings, recycled wool stuffings, polyfibre and foam. We also have a range of threads suitable for mattress stitch and tufting in natural and cream shades. If you'd like to work in a bright colour, please bring thread in the shade of your choice. Students should bring their own fabric with which to make their cushion.
Ideally students should bring their own sewing machine, in good working order. Students who may need to borrow a sewing machine must let us know when you book. Thank you.
We will keep your creativity fuelled with plenty of tea and coffee (and cake).

Class duration:             Two days, 9.30am to 4.30pm.
