Deep buttoned footstool - a two day workshop
During this three-day course, upholsterers will learn how to create fluting and channelling effects. Working with both traditional and modern materials, they will build up a set of sample frames, exploring the effects that can be created with these versatile, creative and very popular techniques. Students will make: a fluted frame using traditional methods with hair, hessian and calico; a fluted frame using foam; and frame using shallow channeling work, most-often seen in automotive upholstery but which is now being borrowed with great creative effect for interiors.
Who's it for? Those with upholstery training, and professional upholsterers.
What is provided? Students will be provided with a set of 35x35cm wooden exercise frames for use on the course which will be theirs to take home. All upholstery materials such as calico, hessian, hair, foam, tacks etc are available for use and can be paid for at the end. Hand tools are all available, but it is expected that students will like to bring their own tools, or at least their favourite hammer and scissors.
What to bring? Students must bring their own upholstery weight top fabric. A wool cloth would be ideal for these techniques. There will be some suitable top fabrics available for students to purchase, although colours will be limited. For those who like to use them, students may bring their own staple guns. There'll be plenty of teas and coffees, and homemade cake to keep your creativity fuelled. Most students like to bring a packed lunch, and we also have the lovely Field Kitchen cafe just next door.
