Creative Soft Furnishings Course - 10 weeks
The Traditional Upholstery School's 10-week Creative Soft Furnishings Course is designed to teach many of the core skills central to soft furnishings. Running one morning a week for 10 weeks, students build up their sewing, cutting, planning and design techniques working on four specific projects. These projects are: a piped scatter cushion with zip; a lampshade loose cover; a Roman blind; and a loose slip cover for a dining chair.
By the end of the course students will have a solid set of transferrable skills with which they can go on to re-furnish their homes or even take first steps into a career in soft furnishings. With a maximum of eight students per course, the amount and quality of the tuition received is exceptional, and is geared to individual needs. While the course is suitable for relative beginners in sewing, students are expected to be able to use their own sewing machine.
Sessions 1 and 2: Know your sewing machine - a practical introduction
Make a piped scatter cushion with a zip
Sessions 3 and 4: Make a Roman blind
Session 5 and 6: Make a lampshade loose cover
Sessions 7, 8, 9 and 10: Make a slip cover for a dining chair
What to bring? We have a few sewing machines, scissors and threads, but we believe you'll enjoy the course much more if you bring along your sewing kit (sharp fabric scissors, matching thread, tailor's chalk and a few pins) plus your own sewing machine if you have one. You must bring a dining chair you would like to cover (or one of a set), and a cone-shaped lampshade to make a loose cover for. Cushion inserts and Roman blind-making sets are supplied at a competitive price.
About your tutor: Avril Hadfield (pictured above) is highly qualified with a degree in Fashion and Textiles and many years experience in teaching and examining. Her passion for textiles has led her to train and work professionally in interior design, working in retail and on private commissions. We'd also like to let you know that her grandma was a court dressmaker.
