French upholstery with Armand Verdier - a five-day course
Five day course with the talented Armand Verdier, students will upholster a ‘tabouret carré’, a low square stool. This is often the first piece that a French novice upholsterer would make, which they then use to perch on as they work. During the course students will study the basics of French upholstery techniques: learning the skills of accurate-to-a-thread precision and beautifully balanced composition for which Armand has become known. Students will be able to take home their finished stools.
Who's it for? Some upholstery experience required.
About your tutor. Armand has trained at France’s most renowned school of arts and crafts, the Ecole Boulle in Paris. His broad experience includes four years working for Angela Burgin, one of the UK’s leading experts in traditional upholstery. Now based in Buckinghamshire, Armand spends much of his time working on private commissions as well as collaborating with antique dealers and interior designers. He began teaching French upholstery techniques in Britain in 2013. He and his tutor Laurent Lainé from the Ecole Boulle, are the only individuals teaching the art of French upholstery in the UK. www.armand-verdier.com
What to bring? Each student will be provided with a 35cm x 35cm hardwood stool frame. Traditional upholstery materials including hair, tacks, linen twine and stuffings will be provided for use on the course. Students must bring their own top fabric, assuming they anticipate finishing by the end of the course. Hand tools will be available for use, but it is expected that students will like to bring their own tools, or at least their favourite hammer and scissors.
Materials and stuffings will recharged on an as-you-use-it basis, with the final tally due at the end of the course. Students may bring their own supply of materials and stuffings, if they wish.
There'll be plenty of teas and coffees and cake to keep your creativity fuelled, but students are requested to bring a packed lunch.
