Advanced Professional Diploma in Upholstery
This second in-depth year of tuition allows students who have graduated from the Professional Diploma Course to further explore creative upholstery and to gain confidence in their technical skills.
Students build their repertoire working on two complex pieces of furniture, plus creating a comprehensive portfolio of advanced techniques. Each student will reupholster a concave mid-20th century style chair, furthering their pattern cutting and sewing techniques to a high level. They will also create a portfolio of advanced upholstery techniques, such as fluting, decorative pleating, decorative buttoning styles. Tat least one of these techniques will then be used on the restoration and recovering of a second piece of furniture. To boost confidence in traditional upholstery stitching, students will work on a curved frame to create a raised hair pad using blind, top-edge and feather-edge stitching techniques.
This course is designed for graduates of the One Year Diploma course and may be enrolled on immediately after the first year, or after a break.
The course runs for 35 days, one day a week thoughout the academic year. Depending on the class you book, courses run from September to July or January to December.
• Upholster a mid-century concave chair: fully reupholstered. Modern methods
• Build a portfolio of creative upholstery techniques, including fluting, surface quilting, deep and shallow buttoning styles. A minimum of four of these techniques must be worked up to finished sample frame.
• Upholster a curved seat using traditional stitching methods and materials.
• Restore a traditional armchair, with coil sprung seat. Should include at least one of the
techniques from the creative module.
Theory and written work:
All practical projects will be documented in a portfolio, explaining full understanding of methods and materials used. All practical projects will have a full write-up of fire regulations pertinent to that project, and presented as to a potential customer.

The next Traditional Upholstery School Advanced Professional Diploma starts in September 2019 class on Thursdays throughout term time and concludes in July 2020. Students will receive their Certificate of Graduation at the end of the course. The day starts at 9.30am and finishes at 4.30pm.
