The Traditional Upholstery School was founded in 2016 by Joanna Heptinstall to teach traditional and modern upholstery, soft furnishing skills and lampshade making. Classes and workshops include morning leisure classes, one and two-day workshops and a one-year professional diploma. Joanna and her fellow tutors share a passion and enthusiasm for fine craftsmanship and creativity, allowing all our students – whether pursuing a creatively satisfying hobby or making steps towards a new career – to produce high quality work stamped with their own individuality.
"There is nothing more satisfying than creating something beautiful with little more than your hands and a hammer "
About your tutor Joanna…
Joanna trained as an upholsterer 16 years ago and has enjoyed a successful career restoring furniture for private individuals and interiors companies, working from her studio at home. During that time she discovered a passion for making and restoring lampshades, which has become a major part of her creative output.
Joanna has taught upholstery since 2011 locally and for the esteemed Craft School at Denman, Oxfordshire. Joanna is a member of the Association of Master Upholsterers & Soft Furnishers.
The launch of the Traditional Upholstery School is the realisation of a long-held ambition.
